Jon hooper London trip + inspiration for end of year show 2016

For the London art trip i visited the Tate modern on the themes front ! whilst I closely studied some artist inspiration from the likes of J.M.W Turner and close artistic friend John Constable they were my favourite choices for studying. From the large scaled oil  on canvas paintings of famous people and stunning landscapes this has helped me by making choices of my own to paint in a similar style.

whilst i was visiting the museum i had encountered other forms of contemporary art such as the Tracey Emin installation the bed! it had its own sensor security field around just like the sacred Mona Lisa portrait would.it filled me with sadness ,pain, pity, and other tearful emotions that i cannot understand why this is so famous and popular its literally a bed with some of her objects scattered around i really dont understand it but  i did see information about its meaning and it did become fairly clear what it represents :
A consummate storyteller, Tracey Emin engages the viewer with her candid exploration of universal emotions. Well-known for her confessional art, Tracey Emin reveals intimate details from her life to engage the viewer with her expressions of universal emotions. Her ability to integrate her work and personal life enables Emin to establish an intimacy with the viewer.

Tracey shows us her own bed, in all its embarrassing glory. Empty booze bottles, fag butts, stained sheets, worn panties: the bloody aftermath of a nervous breakdown. By presenting her bed as art, Tracey Emin shares her most personal space, revealing she’s as insecure and imperfect as the rest of the world.

So onto the main inspirational encounter that i really had during being in London was because of its iconic landmarks i walked all the way to the London Eye and the great Tower of London,Westminster abbey and other well know buildings
So i had used my 13 mega-pixel Sony selfie camera mode where i had included myself and showing off the landmarks within the background example of the image :

Okay so for the end of year show that is coming up in July TBA:  at the queens road Bristol school of art

end of year show - self portrait scenes from past holidays!

for the end of year show i was looking over some of my old photographs from holidays and past memories,i started to use up some A3 sized cuts of MDF wood to make paintings of places i visited. for two of these images i have secretly placed my shadow/silhouette within the paintings so it looks like i am still there from the original photographic images i have chosen.

1st idea - i believe i will do a combination of either a self portrait sized at A2 !  and then expand it with a even  larger cut of wood for the background and that will be made into a  holiday scenery.

2nd- a second idea i had was to draw up an urban scene of a Bristol building/landmark and include myself within the painting.

3rd Bristol landmark the Clifton suspension bridge i did lots of bridge photographic research during my foundation year 1 project! i could return to that!

4th idea- paint old photographs of memories

5th idea - photorealism self portrait idea with objects from holiday/sunglasses sun-cream,light etc

a collection of a3 sized cuts of mdf wood acrylic paintings that i would like to keep creating a series of for my own hobby work hang them in house /studio/other. use them for landscape research ideas i really am starting to like painting landscapes now they are much easier that painting portraits i just cant seem to fully grasp the concept of painting self portraits ATM maybe when i get a response from the portrait painting of the year 2016 show then ill really have to step up my game i just hope my sent portrait images were of good use but i highly doubt it :(

a proposal for end of year show 2016 !

I have chosen to produce a series of painting from my holidays from my past painting memories and past photographic pictures.

I have begun to produce MDF cuts of wood of A3 sizes there shall be as many as i can create within the final 5 weeks of College
also landscapes objects animals and forms will be added to my work.

photos of all my holiday experiences

wip photograph classic photo albums

photos from Easter holiday down Cornwall,Newquay,St Ives etc!  WIP...

So far i have painted an image of a spider crab which was left hollowed/ gutted and was really rotting upon a boat outside newquay seaside harbor restaurant!   the creature has so much detail and tone to it i had to recreate it with paints i think it'll look very impressive once completed.I am  painting it with acrylic paints on MDF wood i will be using cuts of MDF for the final outcomes. and them have a mini sketchbook of all the photos and places that i visited along the Cornish holiday!

another image that i am currently painting is a selfie looking very displeased with the fact that the TATE ST IVES Building will be closed for renovation and construction till spring 2017.
but that didnt really bother me too much because there were plenty of other studios and gallery's of other artists who have spent there lifetime sourcing the location around them for paintings and using natural sources of sculptural creations.

okay cancel this proposal because it is now changed into combining landmarks and selfie portraits in one painting on MDF wood A2 size

Centerspace exhibition JOURNAL 18th/03/2016

Centespace exhibition setting up day on Thursday 17th/03/2016

all of our different mediums of artworks that were created within our work studio in queens road school of art room 06 had to be sent to centerspace gallery in 6 Leonard Ln, Bristol BS1 1EA

JOURNAL: PLANNED DATES

PLAN: For my works i have chosen to select four closely similar sized MDf cuts of wood that are A2 sized each one had been primered with white on the front but not the backs that had to stay natural in case any drilling was required instead a  method the colleges staff workshop had the idea of hanging the works up with a  small square piece of wooden block that would be stapled directly half way above the top of the back of the mdf wood piece so then a hook can be fitted where a nail would be pinned up onto the exhibition wall and the works would then sit  upon it. I had to use a small clump of blue tack at the bottom corners of the piece to stop the pieces from tilting and moving .
Also thanks to some curating ideas from the other artists these works were intended to sit onto a flat part of the wall at the front entrance but instead because these works were of self portraiture of myself they would look much better sitting on a sharp corner of the wall space and facing the front entrance so people can observe the works either from afar or up close.

Friday 18th-march: our exhibition of the Centerspace gallery was opened and are now ready to show off to the public of Bristol it will be running for four days

for the next starting week for set-up Wednesday, we needed to send all of our completed exhibiting works ready to be setting up down at the exhibition space. this means all works had to be fitted with something that could then be placed and hooked up onto the porcilin walls mine were nailed upon the walls each section stood at 10 feet high 6 foot wide.
Wednesday afternoon? : setting up and having a critique session with staff and students?with thoughts and ideas on what we believed worked best and to check to see if it was done according to curatorial plans!

Friday:  private meeting, lots of people, students staff visited i wasn't able to come because  i had tea far too late.

Sunday:  instead I brought my parents along to observe the show and the works and I told them what each persons works was all about and what its meanings were ! also what they thought about each one. Overall  they enjoyed the works but hated the alleyway it was too doggy for them and warned me not to be down there late alone.

Monday: sitting in on 12:00 - 6 pm time slot looking after the exhibition space !more than 100 came total number of people who visited was 600 estimate!

Tuesday :only stayed for a hour or two due to it just being me alone in the gallery! sorry for the inconvenience .

Wednesday : finishing cleaning and reverting the space to default settings!  and packing up and taking everything back up to queens road school of art .

here are my four piece sequence  of works that i had put up for the show :

separated each image had a title underneath each with a meaning to the theme movement :

 " a thermal blur"
by using lots of powerful bright colours to represent the thermal imaging from a photographic portrait also by adding white drips and scrapes to make the picture blurry and distorted.

"half me,moving away"
criticised by people who viewed it as a split personality! this painting is the left hand side half of me painted realistically with HDR effective colour tones and just a  static portrait, and the other half was it all being smeared dragged scraped and  wiped away .this was my preferred portrait out of the four.
 ! "im feeling blurry "
for this painting i had used an painting medium effect called fluid retarder this had  help make the painting have a longer lasting dryness effect.then add water mixing  to the acrylics and it turns the picture in a murky blur and also the dripping effects sit nicely on the surface. This gives a nice moving effect, but sadly it didnt help make my face look better, making some parts puffy and blobby also pretty out of proportion too even though it was still a nice impactful portrait painting.

 "im dispersing"
My final portrait painting was the last idea of the sequence of paintings i used each section of the coloured detail effects and add strong vibrant cutting edge line in between parts of the facial details.
masking tape was used to align and fill in the sections across the face.

centerespace exhibition - MOVEMENT 17th march -24th

by placing both of my finished works that will be used for centerespace exhibition MOVEMENT  i can observe from afar any disproportional areas that can be added or to improve on. this has  helped me get a good look from afar and see where i can brush up any areas that need be. this is not the final approach to these images i believe it requires more straight lines which will be fixed with masking tap to straighten any loose lines across the face and for the background.

mirror mirror combinding realism and movement split personality down the middle of the painting so there is a sense of direction and movement within this painting
